Description:

Banner Engineering's SM502A LED Scanner is a retroreflective mode photoelectric sensor in the SM5xx family that uses a visible red beam for sensing. It operates from 12–18 VDC, draws typically less than 40 mA, and delivers a fast 1 ms response time with reliable detection across a 6 ft (3 m) range when used with an appropriate reflector. The device features dual complementary NPN transistor outputs (one normally open and one normally closed), each capable of sinking up to 250 mA, and it is paired with a 4-conductor shielded cable about 6 ft long. The enclosure is a die-cast metal housing with fully gasketed optics, rated for multiple environments under Banner’s NEMA compatibility (1, 2, 3, 3S, 4, 4X, 12, 13), and it tolerates operating temperatures from -40 to +70 °C. The sensing beam is a visible 650 nm red light, suitable for applications such as code reading and conveyor sensing where retroreflective guidance is advantageous. The SM502A P/M is currently listed as INACTIVE/obsolete by Banner, so for new designs Banner recommends selecting a current replacement or newer retroreflective sensor model while considering the legacy performance characteristics of this unit. This model is part of Banner’s legacy SM512/SM502A family, distinct from the infrared SM512 variant.
