Sommer Automatic ST36-B Needle Gripper

The ST36-B Needle Gripper from Zimmer Group (originally Sommer Automatic) is a pneumatically driven needle-handling device designed for high-speed automation in pharmaceutical, medical, cosmetic, and food packaging applications. It features a 20-needle array with a 0.7 mm needle diameter and a configurable needle stroke up to 1.5 mm, enabling precise gripping and deposition of individual needles. The drive is a single-acting pneumatic cylinder with spring return; end-position sensing is available via optional magnetic field sensors for shorter cycle times, and energy/sensor supply can be delivered through standard straight M12 plug-in connectors. Per-cycle air consumption is about 1 cm³, and the unit operates at 4–8 bar (nominal 6 bar) within a 5–80 °C range. Retract and extend times are 0.03 s, with a repetition accuracy of ±0.05 mm, and the assembly is IP30 protected, weighing approximately 0.21 kg. Notable features include a workpiece-release function to reliably deposit the needle and a vacuum blow-off option to reject or eject parts as needed, with a rated life of up to 5 million maintenance-free cycles.
